My Thomas Hart Benton and Diego Rivera inspired piece demonstrates an idea through an editorial cartoon. This cartoon features a character who struggles with body image. The girl thinks that she is much heavier than she truly is and the girl sets a goal for herself to become very thin. The purpose of my piece is to encourage girls to feel comfortable in their own skin. Likewise, it demonstrates that people are much more beautiful than they think they are (i.e. girl had a much different view of herself than reality).
As a teacher, I want to promote to the best of my abilities, students who feel good about themselves. I would love to do whole person compliment activities in my classroom. For example, the "student of the week" in my classroom will receive compliments from his or her peers. Each students must provide the "student of the week" with a compliment (i.e. you are an awesome artist). In turn, this "student of the week" will feel good about themselves. In addition, I would love for my students to create their own editorial cartoon based upon something they are passionate about. These editorial cartoons could stem off of a literacy lesson in which students artistically express themselves through words and pictures a topic of interest to them.

For this piece, I was presented the task of recreating a story. When given the option of choosing a favorite childhood story, I immediately thought of a memorable experience I shared with my sister at my grandparent's farm. My older sister Ashlee and I loved to explore the lake at the top of the hill overlooking grandpa's big red barn. However, Ashlee and I were thrown for an unexpected surprise as one of grandpa's cows charged towards us chasing us down the hill. Although frightened, we survived to tell the story and it still remains as one of my favorite childhood memories. I depicted this memory in my art piece which features the big red barn and the cow that chased my sister and I about ten years ago. I brought in some new colors for contrast as well as some similar colors that are evident in the border of the art piece.
I think that this project could be a great activity for the students in my classroom. Once again, this project could be a great integration piece with writing. Students can use their piece to expand upon one of their favorite stories in their writer's notebooks. Likewise, students could highlight their favorite aspect of a story that they have read.

Through this art piece, I explored sculpture through the use of found objects. Specifically, we (Hayley, Hope, and I) utilized duct tape, paper clips, and staples as found objects. These objects were used to create an art piece reflecting differing views on marriage. The duct tape used to create the band of the wedding ring represents a somewhat committal view on marriage as duct tape is extremely adhesive, yet tends to leave a residual effect. The paper clips used to form the diamond part of the ring display a very low level of commitment because paper clips serve as a temporary hold for paper. Lastly, the staples are being used to help the wedding ring sit upright. Staples represent a heavily committed partner as staples are traditionally viewed as being a semi-permanent fix. The ring rests on a collage of wedding pictures that helps form a visual piece that connects to the common theme of marriage.
I love the notion of using found objects in my own classroom. Through this opportunity, we were able to work with partners if we chose to do so. Likewise, I think that this could function as an ideal means for improving an overall classroom community atmosphere. However, I would encourage students to only use recyclable materials as found objects. Students can use these environmentally friendly found objects to create a piece on anything that is appropriate yet reflects a common theme of relationships. This project could assist in promoting reusable materials.
